The big box hardware stores only similar cheap replacements to the outlets installed by the contractor who built my house. I would rather spend a little more and use these replacements. Buy these and be done with it.

Flimsy Junk

I bought four of these to replace some 40 year old outlets because plugs would no longer stay in the sockets. These new outlets are much less solid and surely won’t last as long, Our house has standard 12 gauge copper wire. It’s thick and it’s stiff, but it’s code. The outlet has holes far too small to insert 12 or 14 gauge wire. The instructions say that wires that size need to be wrapped around the screws instead, which would be very difficult! So I used some wood screws to enlarge the holes so I could insert the wires. The ground screw is on a metal tab that bends when you’re trying to screw down the ground wire. Once it’s installed, it’s hard to insert the plugs into the outlet. One of my outlets had three white and three black wires to connect, which would be impossible with this unit. Fortunately, I had an outlet that was left over from an old project, that had 4 terminals, that was probably more than 20 years old (I tend not to throw anything out), still in the box. Actually made in the USA. Much more solid! Wires slid right in. No comparison to this cheap junk. If the problem with plugs being difficult to insert into these Ultrapro outlets persists, I’ll go to the hardware store and see if I can find some better quality units.
